On August 20, 1589 James married Anne of Denmark. They had eight children but sadly, one three survived: Charles 1st of England, Prince Henry of Wales, and Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia. On March 24, 1603, at the age of 37, James Stuart became King of England. He was the successor of Elizabeth 1st so he had the Spanish-Anglo War to deal with and he also had to focus on matters in Scotland. He was Protestant and not fond of Catholics and the feeling was mutual. The Roman Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes attempted the Gunpowder Plot where they tried to kill the king, his wife, his son (Charles 1st) and the House of Parliament. They failed and were persecuted and killed. His wife, Anne of Denmark died in 1619 of dropsy. That caused a wave of depression upon James and he was never the same again. He soon became arrogant, thinking god chose him to be the ruler of England. Soon, he became an Absolute Monarch, saying he should create laws not Parliament and inconstant arguments with Parliament on the matters of money. He ruled England for 22 long and slightly peaceful years and died March 22, 1625 of a stroke.
